“Ruby Throat”by: Gene & Rebecca Tobey
Starting in 1987, Gene & Rebecca were creating large, brightly colored ceramic animal sculptures…Many painters prefer to paint on one or two specific sizes of canvas, with each painting being a unique effort. Essentially, that is what they did. Gene created an original sculpture that they then molded, and after the mold was made, they destroyed the original sculpture.
Their slip-cast technique used liquid clay, called slip. By using a plaster mold and the “slip” they would create a ceramic positive from the negative mold. This is done by slowly adding the slip layer by layer until a specific thickness is reached.
Even though they had moved to working in Bronze before Gene’s death, Rebecca has in recent years gone back to their ceramic process and is creating new shapes to go along with their old ones. Gorgeous in their colors, these ceramic animals are perfect for any southwestern art collector.
