“Mama’s Stallion”

by: Gene & Rebecca Tobey

“Each of our sculptures comes from a personal experience, but none more so than Mama’s Stallion.  In 1987, we purchased an Appaloosa mare and her year-old colt…She did not like to be petted or groomed, especially around her face, but under saddle, she was a delight to ride.

…Twice a year, our mare, whom we nicknamed Mama, came into season, and at those times, she became another horse entirely! …She became calm, docile, and tender. The love of her life was Gene Tobey. She wrapped her head around him, her eyes half closed with a dreamy look, and hugged him as tightly as a person might. She hugged all of us…but it was Gene who was her stallion.”
