“Looking Back”

by: Sandra Brestel

“Inspired by the ancient cave paintings found in France and Spain, this panel emulates the highly detailed and wonderful paintings of prehistoric man. Many of these ancient images found all over Europe and are more than 20,000 years old! These incredible paintings are a testament to man and his artistic drive, created in deep subterranean corridors that have never seen the light of day. Imagine a shaman embarking upon a journey deep within the subterranean levels of an immense cavern, taking with him powders to make colored pigments. The only light he had to navigate this labyrinth of spectral formations and bottomless chasms, was a hand held lamp made of polished sandstone, fueled by wicks of juniper saturated in animal fat.

As it is today, as in prehistoric times, you could wind up dead and unknown in your pursuit of artistic vision. However, these paintings were certainly religious in nature and held great magical powers. Surely, painting the likeness of a great mammoth or a herd of reindeer deep within the womb of mother earth was an act of great respect and reverence.”
