“Indian Summer”

“A gentle breeze stirs along the canyon wall, as these ancient petroglyphs begin to glow in the early autumn light. Hidden in the cool shadow of the warming rock, lichen seems to float at the surface of an imagined pool of clear water, and just below the surface, suspended in time, drifts a collection of concentric circles. Concentric circles are water symbols representing the ripples on the surface of water. They also are
considered markers for the location of a vortex, the place the spirits emerge from the spirit world. This sacred place was created long ago by a shaman who recognized the presence of rain spirits here within the rocks. All of these images are related to the necessity of precious rain fall. The main figure here is that of a shaman with an outstretched arm supporting the arc of a rainbow, and lines of rain falling from beneath.
During the long life cycle of these ancient works, other symbols and images are added by migrating clans. Often the additions are prayers that enhance the magic power of the original prayer. The rabbits and lizards are obvious fertility symbols. There also seems to be sense of celebration here with the flute playing Kokopelli, dancing flutes, and a bird image, complete with the symbol of song coming from its beak. Another curious image is barely discernable at the far right of the panel. It is the goggle-eyed Mesoamerican rein deity, known as Tlaloc. All of these ancient prayers are for the abundance of rain fall, which in turn creates a successful final harvest in the chill of an Indian Summer.”
