“Village People”

On canyon walls and silent stone,
They drew the tales they’d never own.
In red and black, in white and flame,
A people etched without a name.
Handprints reach across the years,
Buffalo run, the hunter nears.
Circles, stars, and painted skies—
The village speaks, though no one cries.

A spiral turns like winds that spin,
The fire dances deep within.
Stick-figured dreams, a sacred mark,
The moon beside the meadowlark.
Children’s feet in narrow caves,
Their laughter gone but still it waves.
In sacred red, they told their truth—
Of death, of birth, of love, of youth.

Village people, bold and wise,
You painted stars before the skies.
What did you pray? What did you fear?
The thunder god? The mountain deer?
Your spirits speak, though none are shown—
A mystery carved in bone and stone.

Are these a map or are they dreams?
Prophecies or forest schemes?
Or songs for those who’ve gone ahead—
The living art of all the dead.

So we stand in the desert air,
And feel your presence everywhere.
Not gone—not gone—you still remain
In painted flame, in earth and rain.

Village people, rise again—
From canyon walls, from dust and wind.
You told your story without sound—
We hear you now, from underground.
Your spirit lingers, fully grown—
A mystery still carved in stone.

In symbols deep and shadows cast…
The village people speak at last.
