This piece is the second in Greg Creason’s “Sugar Skull Series” that was inspired by his experiences in culturally rich areas like California and New Orleans, where Mexican and artistic traditions thrive. The series showcases Creason’s deep admiration for “La Catrina”, an icon of Mexico’s Day of the Dead created by artist Jose Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s. Originally, LA Catrina served as a satire, symbolizing that death is an equalizer, affecting all regardless of status—a reminder to embrace authenticity rather than aspire to false ideals. This appreciation of Mexican heritage and symbolism has driven Creason’s unique, colorful art style, visible in his sugar skull works, which fuse cultural homage with intricate, modern design.
Creason’s works will invoke passion, boundless love, color and awe. His wife is his muse and main inspiration, always motivating him to create artwork that he might not have on his own. Creason chooses to depict women to spotlight their inner and outer strengths, beauty, and mystery. Using found jewelry, hand-blown glass, and garments to embellish his paintings, no two will ever be the same, but will always leave you inspired and entranced by his use of color.
