Gary Caldwell is a metal sculptor living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and has crafted distinctive, beautiful art in stainless steel for over 30 years. He is a completely self-taught artist who learned to work with metal while serving in the Navy in the late 1960s. Gary found he had a natural knack for working with fire and metal that spurred him into the process of sculpting artistically and he found a flair for transforming sheets of stainless steel into fanciful three-dimensional creations.
Drawn towards capturing the beauty of natural subjects such as trees, birds, bugs, fresh and salt water fish, sea life like octopi and turtles, Gary performs extensive research of the subjects so that each portrayal is anatomically accurate. He works exclusively in stainless steel, skillfully shaping and texturizing the metal by hand and heat and his own customized tools. Gary has also developed his very own special technique for bringing out a beautiful range of color on the steel: there are no paints or chemicals involved, he simply heats the steel to bring out vibrant colors that include cobalt blue, burnished bronze, and coal black. The combination of Gary’s creativity and the inherent variances in his entire artistic design process ensures each finished piece of art is truly original and unique. The beautiful colors are highly durable—little maintenance is required—so his sculptures are appropriate for display inside a building or out in a garden.
The sculptures are created for both the private and public spheres—Gary’s work is housed and displayed in galleries, museums, universities, airports, and even churches. Quite often, Gary Caldwell enjoys the pleasure of collaborating with sculptor Holly Felice on public art projects. Holly became Gary’s apprentice, thus ensuring his unique techniques will continue on.
