I saw my yard with trees and bark,
It needed color, joy so bright.
And then I thought how great would be,
How tulips here would gift me glee.
I bought some tools, and bulbs galore,o
I scooped the earth, oh what a chore.
A shovel, dig, my sweat, and gloves,
But it was worth the labor of love.

I dreamed you’ll stand, so bold, so fair,
You’re dressed in satin, silk in air.
I couldn’t wait to feel that gleam,
A satin kiss, a childhood dream.
As spring came soon, I watched with glee,
The ground had swelled where you would be,
Your leaves grew fast, so strong and tall,
Your buds were ready for the show.
And then one morning, my dismay,
I did not see your buds display.
The deer had feasted in the night,
You were desert, they loved their plight.

I should have known, I should have learned,
I should have read and be concerned.
That in this place, where nature’s free,
That joy would come to deer, not me.

When said and done, I smiled and thought,
How nature won this grand jackpot
