“A Good Day”

The Native Americans had no written language so, may petroglyph sites are difficult to interpret, and they are often spiritual and magical in nature, filled with symbols and images of supernatural deities and spirit animals.
While some sites are very spiritual in nature, other rock art sites seem to record a specific event in ancient history, but those are rare. This place is alive with images and symbols of every-day life, from etchings depicting a hunting party to a trio of maidens carrying water, complete with hair whorls and an earthen jug balanced on her head.
The etched images of rabbits are a powerful symbol of fertility. The herd of antelope and a pair of bison tells us of a happy time of abundance and prosperity. Concentric circles are a symbol of water while the double-ended spiral represents a journey in both the spiritual sense as well as the earthly.
The flute-playing Kokopelli, of course, suggest a time of music, dance, and celebration. All of these meticulously created images are signs of life spanning thousands of years. They are stories of tribes, clans, and of individuals that have lived out their lives in this sacred place. These places still resonate with the voices of these ancient people. They have left signs of their lives buried deep within the soil and etched upon the rocks, and sometimes these signs were just there to say…”We had a good day.”
