This art piece celebrates the tradition of basket weaving in Native American culture, where each strand carries memory, prayer, and purpose. It honors the women who passed down their wisdom through this sacred art, weaving not only vessels for daily life but also symbols of strength, continuity, and the spirit of their people.

THE BASKET WEAVER

She was just a little girl
Running by the stream,
Watching grandma’s gentle hands
Weaving like a dream.
She sat beside her every day,
Learning what to do—
To honor Earth with every thread
And shape her people’s truth.

She became a basket weaver,
Keeper of the flame.
Each basket held the stories,
The prayers, the tribe’s good name.
For gathering, for blessing,
For birth and sacred song—
The baskets held her people’s life
And made her spirit strong.
She grew up with mountain wind
Whispers in her ear.
The elders shared their wisdom
And showed her not to fear.
She made a basket for the corn,
One to hold the rain,
One for newborn babies,
And one to carry pain.
She became a basket weaver,
Keeper of the flame.
Each basket held the stories,
The prayers, the tribe’s good name.
For ceremony and harvest,
For love and passing on—
She wove the strength of many hands
And made her spirit strong.
The land gave her the willow,
The fire gave her light.
The women came before her
And walked with her at night.
Each strand a thread of memory,
Each knot a sacred sign—
To weave is to remember,
To carry ancient time.
She became a basket weaver,
Just like grandma said.
The old ways lived inside her
In every thread she spread.
Now children sit beside her
To learn where they belong—
And they will weave the future
Where baskets carry on.
Basket weaver…
She carried the people…
The story carries on…
