“Wildflower Red”

At times I think from where I came,
a different country, different land.
I was a child that loved to dream,
and loose myself in poppy fields.
I let the wind caress my brow,
and joy would fill a young girls heart.
Those moments that were free and sweet,
I’ll cherish them as long I live.
I’d pick a poppy from the field,
and marvel at its fragile grace.
That would not last as time moved on,
its seeds give birth to fields of gold.

Wildflower red, you mean much more,
than little girls simple ways.
You’re strong, resilient, fragile charm,
a lesson learned for everyone
And such is life, the child has grown,
the memories faded but yet dear.
Wildflower red, it still belongs,
to all that believe in fairytales.
I looked for red in fields of wheat,
I saw their faces touch the sun,
And later learned that they were weeds,
unwanted wild taking the fields.
I didn’t care, how tough their will,
to come back strong from year to year.
Their symbol lasts for Poles of past,
the soldiers perished in the war.
