“Written on the Wind” gets its title from a line in Larry McMurtry’s novel Lonesome Dove, which was one of our favorite unabridged books-on-tape. At one point in the novel, the hero, Gus, camps out on the Llano Estacado, a vast plain stretching from West Texas into eastern New Mexico. There he contemplates the silence of the plains at night, recalling that at one time, the plain was covered with a herd of buffalo so vast that it took a rider on horseback a day to travel around it. White men wiped out the buffalo herds, emptying the plains of everything except piles of bones bleaching in the sun. As Gus ponders the future, he speculates that one day the sounds of man will replace the silence. The history of the Llano Estacado was written on the wind, and we named our double buffalo bronze for that history.”
