“Awakening Dawa”

by: Kim Obrzut

Near the spring solstice, the Dawa (or Sun) comes to each village to awaken the Kachinas and let them know that he is rising higher in the sky. With this he brings the promise to the Hopis that the Kachina’s will once again return to dance. He is the Father of all creation and as he rises in the eastern sky, he gathers the prayers of all people. At dusk he will take the prayers to the other world to be heard.
