The style of my wearable sculptures, as I like to refer to my jewelry, is contemporary.
For me, natural stone is about healing and balance, fun and exploration, and very importantly the sensation of touch, the smoothness of the stone, its coldness or warmth, or its weight that feels just right when distributed correctly.
The inspiration for my art comes from the natural landscape, such as the colors and shapes of the waves of lakes or the ocean, light piercing clouds, or mountains at sunsets: images like these are reflected in an abstract composition and are often present in a stone, in a mixed up and abstract way, making the artwork surprising, unpredictable, and inspiring. In my other work, such as sculptures and paintings, the grade of abstraction is very limited. With the jewelry I find I have a medium where I can explore abstraction without loosing the feel of the inspiration.
The creative process starts by choosing the rough stone and determining the 'correct' side to cut and carve carefully the shape to allow the stone to reveal its drama. It is the stone that has to 'speak'. When cutting the stone, I consider that it needs not only its own, clearly defined shape but also enough 'breathing' space around it. The stone's expression is reflected and echoed by the overall open compostition, an open framework with Sterling Silver and semi precious stones, often balanced by gemstones. |
