World-renowned designer William Schraft brings a look to the art world that is uniquely his own. Inspired by ornate woodwork in older homes, as well as scrollwork in Victorian furniture, Schraft's acclaimed Windows Collection strikes a balance between both the contemporary and traditional worlds. He forms bold frameworks in sterling silver detailed with delicate 18K yellow gold filigree accents -- the "windows" of his designs. "I was thinking what I could do with in silver and gold that would be different... and the filigree idea just hit me." The result is a fresh Vintage/Retro style that cleverly portrays Schraft's views from the past and visions of the future.
It seems like a huge leap from the artist's original dream of designing automobiles. "Even though I wanted to become an automobile designer, I realized it doesn't take individual design to complete a car. I liked the idea in jewelry of being able to create a whole piece -- conceive it and then figure out how to produce it." Now Schraft's passion for design is satisfied by working in an industry where he controls the creation of the entire product.
For nearly two decades, Schraft has been recognized for his understated, contemporary designs that helped define the look and direction of American fine art designer jewelry. His work has been recognized in the AGTA Spectrum awards, Diamond of Distinction competitions, Diamonds for Men competitions, and the DeBeers and Diamond Today awards. He has also been featured in countless magazines, newspapers, and on television.
