| She Who Waits Description: | This original painting by JD Challenger depicts the quiet reserve and inner strength symbolic of the many Native American women in history who waited while their fathers, brothers, husbands and sons went into battle. The ethereal quality of the image is enhanced by the pale figure emerging softly from the light background. The portrait features a distinctive tribal hairstyle known as squash blossom or butterfly whorls worn by Hopi Indian maidens of the Southwest. The young maiden’s coppery garment resembles the red sandstone of the region’s distinctive mesa formations.
“She Who Waits” is only the 32nd female Native American portrait JD Challenger has ever painted. According to the artist, "I didn't paint women for the longest time because, to me, every woman has a strength as well as a certain softness -- the eyes, the inner spirit, and the gentleness, and I just couldn't seem to capture it.” Challenger goes on to explain, “I really wanted to paint women because they play such an important part of the culture, not only in this society but all of humankind--I mean they are the ones who hold it all together." The rarity of a JD Challenger painting featuring a lone female makes this elegant and soulful original a fantastic addition to any fine art collection. |
