| Moonlight Sonata Description: | "Moonlight Sonata" features a gorgeous nude woman draped across an arch of white Colorado Marble. The woman is sculpted in Blue Argentine Onyx, which showcases the bright blues and greens of the Mediterranean. This semi-translucent stone captures the light and holds it within, creating a subtle glow. The woman's body is intersected by veins of earth-toned yellow and beige, which makes a lovely contrast. One knee is raised and her back arches in a sensuous curve. One arm rests above her head alongside her long flowing hair.
The arch of white Colorado Marble that serves as the base has a fascinating history; it is the same marble that can be found in the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial was constructed entirely from stone quarried in Colorado. All of the blocks of stone were cut to the exact finished size at the quarry, and then shipped by train to Washington, D.C. for assembly.
The very best blocks of stone were selected to make the columns. These blocks were cut with a rotating cookie cutter to create drums of stone that are stacked to form columns. After the drum was cut, the four corners were discarded on a scrap heap. Even today, some of these discarded corners can be found near the quarry.
The base of this sculpture was cut from one of those corners, and this stone missed out on being a part of the Lincoln Memorial by only 1/8th of an inch! The bottom surface is the original cookie cutter cut. |
