| | To the Buffalo People Writing/Poem: | It is proper to acknowledge the shameful deeds of our predecessors. My Anglo genes thus acknowledge' my Indian genes thus acknowledge. I acknowledge my own shameful deeds. Not all my White forefathers stole Indian land. Not all my Indian forefathers were honorable to my White ancestors. Some White people wastefully slaughtered the buffalo. Some Indian people wastefully slaughtered the buffalo. My Indian ancestor asked, "Who can own the land?" My White ancestor asked, "Who can steal what is not owned?" My mixed and mingled genes cry, "Enough!" We must bury our indignation and come to peace. Only from forgiveness can we come to peace. When at peace we will be ready for understanding. There was a time when this land had no people. We are all immigrants or the children of immigrants. We are all citizens of the Earth. We have all misunderstood. Thinking the Oceans, Seas and Rivers are boundaries. The Sky has always connected us As has the Earth beneath the Waters. It was the same Great Spirit who made us all. Each person must come to know that their personal rights end Where such privileges injure other human beings And intrude upon the inalienable rights of all people. Worrell - 9/1/01 - 2:35 p.m. |
