A brilliantly colored and balanced painting, "Interlude" exemplifies Volkov's use of color and attention to detail applied to the still life arrangements of interior spaces - in this case, a rustic music room.  It is as if Volkov catches the lost moments and silent seconds that slip between the scenes of our daily lives.  Here, a violin case sits unopened on the floor, sheets of music pinned beneath it.  A chair awaits the unseen musician with a sprig of lilacs on its seat.  In the background, a music stand waits patiently.  Notice how the light reflects on the hardwood of the floor and the frame of the chair to create the illusion of space and three-dimensionality. The sun's rays delicately color the room. As extraordinary as this piece is in a photo, it is even more so in person with the subtlety of Volkov's brushwork apparent in every nuance and delicate hue.
